Is it true my 27 year old son can not sit down after Peritonitis surgery?

It's been 15 days since he had the surgery , the surgeons say he can not sitdown only lie down , because sitting down entraps his internal organs. Is this an exaggeration or can he sit down and work on his computer some part of the day?
