What are some great lost rock groups of the 1970s?

Bands like Big Star (who were a huge influence on REM and others), The Raspberries, The Flaming Groovies, etc. These bands are what you call "Power Pop"; it doesn't have to be that style only. As long as they are pretty obscure.
