Cleaning a used fish tank?

Just bought a used 55 gallon fish tank.Great physical shape but they left hard water in it. Now it has a nasty mineral buildup. It has been years since I had a tank but seems like my dad used to clean the tank with a little salt and a sponge then rinse and rinse. Any new ideas for cleaning mineral buildup? Thanks!!
