How was nitric acid made in the 1700's?

Wikipedia has a decent description of the history of nitric acid. It was traditionally made (starting several centuries before the 1700s) from niter, which is not guano but the mineral form of potium nitrate. Niter was heated with sulfuric acid to produce nitric acid.
